Summer 2012 I am tutoring high school and college level clients. We can meet on the UL Lafayette campus or any public location that is a good halfway point between us. I can help students that need assistance with American Literature studies, High School Composition or First Year Writing studies. You need not be enrolled in classes at this time, but if you're just needing a boost in these areas that you want to pursue further next Fall, we should spend time creating a clear plan of action for our meetings. |

American Literature Studies
Although I haven’t taught American Literature courses, I have certainly taken my fair share. I also looked at many course descriptions and the outcomes that students should have by the time they complete the course, when deciding what to help students focus on during tutoring sessions. Here are some of the best concepts that represent what most courses expect students to learn while working with American texts, whether high school or college level:
· Analysis:
o Identify, analyze, and apply knowledge of the structures and elements of literature. o Explain basic elements of argument in text and their relationship to the author’s purpose and use of persuasive strategies. o Engage in critical analysis of a variety of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and drama from a range of periods.
· Writing:
o Explain basic elements of argument in text and their relationship to the author’s purpose and use of persuasive strategies. o Learn the skills necessary for writing about literature and gain extensive writing and oral practice responding to texts and the issues they raise. o Ability to plan, draft, revise, and polish a high-quality collegiate researched essay, appropriately using primary and secondary sources to defend a non-obvious claim (without minimizing or neglecting opposing or alternative views).

Composition Studies Here is my statement from my English 101 syllabus for UL Lafayette, it represents well the kinds of things that I will work with students to improve during tutoring sessions:
Everyone seeking a four year degree at this school must demonstrate that they can meet the First Year Writing goal: The ability to write
a thesis driven essay. We will work together all semester to achieve that ultimate goal. The specific objectives the university requires us to practice and achieve in order to meet the goal are:
o exploring options o thinking about audience o making drafts o taking a mental break o asking for and receiving feedback (testing audience) o making changes before the final stage of polishing occurs. |
